Service, Strength, and the Open Road: A Veteran’s Story

Tom Rasmussen, USMC, 1989

At R.D. Offutt Farms, we’re proud to recognize the veterans among us — individuals whose service to our country continues to shape their work ethic, leadership, and commitment to excellence. This Veterans Day, we honor Tom Rasmussen, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and valued member of our trucking department since 2017.

Tom joined the Marine Corps shortly after graduating high school in 1988. He enlisted in early 1989 and served for eight years, including during Operation Desert Storm. His time in the military took him across the country — from California to North Carolina — and introduced him to lifelong friendships and experiences that shaped his perspective on life.

“I feel like every young man should join the service,” Tom shared. “It makes a man out of you. It helps you grow up, and it’s fun to travel and see different aspects of the world.”

Tom credits the Marine Corps with instilling discipline, drive, and the ability to handle adversity — traits that continue to guide him in civilian life. Whether managing a grain elevator or driving for RDO, Tom brings a strong sense of purpose and independence to everything he does.

“The service teaches you to be self-driven. If you want something out of life, it teaches you to go after it. There are ups and downs in life daily, and serving our country teaches you how to be strong and get the best out of each situation,” Tom said.

After his military service, Tom worked in construction and for a local co-op before joining RDO’s trucking team. He enjoys the freedom of the road, visiting different RDO locations, and being part of a team that shares a common goal.

“It’s almost like being self-employed — you’re told where to go, but it’s up to you to get there, get the load, and get back to the plant. I enjoy the freedom.”

Sherri Tatro, RDO Trucking Manager, said that Tom is a great addition to the RDO team and that he will pitch in and do whatever needs to be done to get the job done.

“Tom volunteers for the duties that nobody else cares to do and he gets along well with everyone on the team and the plant,” Sherri said. “Others reach out to him for guidance when they have questions.”

Tom’s story is a powerful reminder of the values that veterans bring to our organization and our communities. We’re grateful for his service — and for the service of all veterans who have sacrificed for our country.

Thank you, Tom, and thank you to all who have served.
