Welcoming the Next Generation to the Farm

At R.D. Offutt Farms, we believe some of the most meaningful work we do happens through education — especially when it comes to sharing agriculture with the next generation. This May, we partnered with Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom to host a Farm Camp experience for a group of curious and engaged learners from Sebeka Public School.

Led by teacher Nikki Ament, 25 seventh grade STEM students joined us for a day of discovery, asking great questions, making connections, and an up-close look at what modern agriculture really looks like. Farm Camps are designed to give students a well-rounded understanding of agriculture, and this experience was no exception. The program brings learning to life through three key components:

  • In-classroom learning, where students build a foundation before stepping onto the farm
  • Hands-on farm tours, where that knowledge becomes tangible
  • Career exploration, helping students see the wide range of opportunities within agriculture

Our team members facilitated the hand-on portion, guiding the group through each stage of potato production:

  • The field, where students learned about planting, growing conditions, and the care it takes to produce a healthy crop.
  • The warehouse, where they saw how potatoes are handled, stored, and prepared for the next stage.
  • Our French fry lab, where science and agriculture come together to ensure quality and consistency in the foods we all love.

You are helping to improve ag literacy among students and connect them to their food and their farmer. We appreciate you!

Brandi Wulkan, Farm Camp Program Director

For many students, it was their first time seeing these processes up close. Being a part of those moments is something we never take for granted.

This event was made possible through collaboration, and we’re grateful for everyone who played a part. From Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom, who continues to do incredible work connecting students with agricultural experiences, to Mrs. Ament, whose enthusiasm and preparation set her students up for success — it truly takes a community to create opportunities like this.

We’re also proud of our team members, who took time to share their knowledge, answer questions, and make students feel welcome. Their willingness to teach and connect is what brings these experiences to life.

Agriculture touches all of our lives, but not everyone has the chance to see how it works from the inside. Programs like Farm Camp help bridge that gap, building understanding, trust, and excitement about where our food comes from.

We’re honored to invest in the next generation, and look forward to welcoming more students to the farm in the future.
